BOSTON – The Boston University men’s swimming and diving team endured its first setback of the 2012-13 season as Brown defeated BU, 162-138, Friday afternoon at the Competition Pool. The Terriers claimed victories in eight of the 16 events.
BU began the meet with a win in the 200 medley relay, as the sophomore quartet of Connor Stuewe, Mario Caballero, Ryan Bach and Cole Puchi placed first in 1:33.53. The Terriers followed that with a second-place finish in the next event, with freshman Tanner Cridland clocking in at 9:50.18.
Sophomore Andy Vazquez finished in the top three of the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:43.02 to place third before Stuewe claimed BU’s first individual victory with a win in the 100 backstroke (50.30).
Caballero followed with a victory in the 100 breaststroke (57.73) then freshman Mun Hon Lee and junior Jeff Thomas took second and third in the 200 butterfly with times of 1:52.13 and 1:53.01, respectively.
Sophomore Ryan Bach placed second in the 50 freestyle (21.70) while Puchi picked up second in the 100 freestyle (47.03).
Lee earned his first victory of the meet in the 200 backstroke (1:53.44) while Caballero followed with a win in the 200 breaststroke (2:05.40).
Thomas (4:38.25) and Stuewe (4:42.99) finished second and third, respectively, in the 500 freestyle while sophomore Brandon Funk took third in the 100 butterfly (51.83). Caballero and Lee combined to finish 1-2 in the 200 IM with Caballero earning the win in 1:52.78 and Lee taking second in 1:53.58.
Junior Jared Scheck led BU in the diving events with a first-place finish from both the 1m board (278.40) and the 3m board (283.35).
BU returns to the pool next weekend for the Terrier Invitational which will take place at the Competition Pool from Nov. 16 to Nov. 18.
