BOSTON - The Boston University softball team (15-8, 0-0 America East) is set to host crosstown rival Boston College in the Terriers’ first home game of the 2012 season on Thursday, March 22, at the BU Softball Field.
BU enters the contest riding a four game winning streak with the most recent victory being a 13-3 defeat of Bryant on Wednesday, March 21. The bats came alive for the Terriers as BU’s 19 hits against the Bulldogs broke the 19-year old school record of 17 hits in a game, set in a contest with Edinboro on March 9, 1993.
Seven different players had at least two hits for BU, with sophomores Jayme Mask, Chelsea O’Connor and Amy Ekart leading the way with three each. O’Connor posted her second home run of the season while rookie Mandy Fernandez recorded her first career homer. Fernandez also knocked in a team-high four runs.
On the mound, junior Erin Schuppert improved 2-3 on the season after pitching all seven innings. Schuppert allowed just three hits and three earned runs while striking out four batters.
O’Connor has been one of BU’s most consistent batters as she leads the team with 26 hits, including a team-high eight doubles, while posting a .329 batting average. Mask, who bats in the Terriers leadoff spot, has the team’s highest on-base percentage (.433) and ranks second on the squad with 25 hits. Ekart leads BU with 18 RBIs off of 21 hits.
On the mound, Holli Floetker leads BU with a 10-2 record and a 2.03 ERA. She has struck out 61 batters in 80.0 innings of work.
The Terriers remain home this weekend and will host Binghamton in BU’s conference opener. The Bearcats will be in Boston for a double-header on Saturday, March 24, at 1 p.m. then return for a single game on Sunday, March 25, at 12 p.m.
