VESTAL, N.Y. - Highlighted by junior Kyle Czarnecki (174) and sophomore Kevin Innis (285) earning their first-ever NCAA berths, the Boston University wrestling team placed fourth at the 2012 CAA Championships, held Saturday at Binghamton University.
Czarnecki reached the 174-pound championship, where he fell to top-seeded Te Edwards of Old Dominion by a score of 6-2. In a true-second match, Czarnecki defeated Caleb Wallace of Binghamton, 7-3, to punch his ticket to the NCAA Championships.
In the heavyweight bracket, Innis recovered from a semifinal loss with a 10-6 win over Old Dominion's Matt Tourdot in the consolations to reach the third-place match. With a spot to the NCAAs on the line, Innis edged Paul Snyder of Hofstra, 3-2.
Hofstra won the team title with 80.5 points to edge the host Bearcats, who totaled 78.5. Old Dominion placed third with 68.5 and the Terriers earned 34 points to just barely beat out Drexel (33.5) for fourth.
The Terriers had three two-time NCAA qualifiers come up short in their attempt to secure another berth to nationals. Seniors Fred Santaite (133) and John Hall (197) and junior Hunter Meys (184) hope to be among the 40 at-large berths, which will be announced on Tuesday (March 6).
Despite being unseeded, Meys finished third in the 184-pound bracket by winning three of his four matches on the day, including two pins. He edged fourth-seeded Billy Curling of Old Dominion, 3-2, in the third-place bout.
Santaite reached the 133 semifinals, where he dropped a narrow 2-0 decision. He rebounded with a 9-4 win in the wrestlebacks before falling, 6-3, in the third-place match to Binghamton's Patrick Hunter.
Hall had his first two blemishes of the season, as he entered the tournament with a perfect 14-0 record. After a 10-4 quarterfinal victory, he lost to third-seeded Brandon Palik (Drexel), 8-1, before falling to Cody Reed (Binghamton) by a score of 9-5.
Sophomore Bubba McGinley started off the day with a bang, upsetting third-seeded Chuck Ziesloft of Rider, 1-0, in the quarterfinals. He was pinned in the semifinals, but topped fourth-seeded Derek Steeley of Binghamton, 8-5, to reach the third-place match, where he fell to Jerome Robinson (ODU), 3-0, to finish fourth.
The middle portion of the Terrier lineup all suffered losses in their first two matches. Freshman Tyler Scotton (141), sophomore B.J. Suitor (149) and freshman Mitchell Wightman (165) were all competing in their first conference tournament. Sophomore Nick Tourville was making a repeat appearance for the Terriers at 157.
Czarnecki opened his day with a 3-1 win over Hofstra's Jermaine John in the quarterfinals before reaching the title bout thanks to an injury default against Rider's Jim Resnick in the semifinals. In the quartefinals, Innis posted an 8-2 triumph against George Mason's Adam Barnette.
The NCAA Championships will take place at Scottrade Center in St. Louis from March 15-17.
