McGoldrick, Morrow Named 2012 Women's Soccer Captains
BOSTON - Following its 3-0 victory over Central Connecticut on Friday night, No. 23 Boston University makes the short trip to Brookline, Mass., for a Sunday evening affair with Northeastern. First kick is set for 6 p.m. at Parsons Field.
Sunday’s game marks the 13th installment in the all-time series between the Terriers and the Huskies with BU holding a 10-2-1 advantage, including a 2-0 victory last season. However, the last time the Terriers made the trip Parsons Field, the Huskies came away with a 1-0 victory on Sept. 18, 2009.
The Terriers enter Sunday’s game with a 1-0-0 record after blanking Central Connecticut, 3-0, Friday night at Nickerson Field. Sunday night’s game will be the first of the season for the Huskies.
Senior Brea Hewitt led the way for the BU against Central Connecticut as she recorded the first multi-goal game of her career. The Asburn, Va., native scored the first goal of the Terriers season in the 30th minute when she put herself in the right position to bury a rebound from junior Megan McGoldrick’s corner kick. Hewitt later scored BU’s third goal of the night when she scored off a cross from McGoldrick in the 77th minute.
Sophomore Jamie Turchi also found the back of the net on Friday, as classmate Kai Miller dished her an assist off another corner kick from McGoldrick in the 72nd minute of the contest.
Junior Andrea Green was credited with the shutout in her first-ever start in net for the Terriers. The keeper played all 90 minutes and stopped the three shots that she faced.
Northeastern enters the 2012 season following a 9-10-2 campaign last year that ended with a 1-0 loss to VCU in the CAA semifinals. The Huskies open their regular season on Sunday but did defeat Maine, 2-0, in an exhibition match on Aug. 12.
Senior Greta Samuelsdottir is Northeastern’s top returning scorer after tallying eight goals last season. The Huskies also return redshirt-sophomore Devin Griffin, the 2009 CAA Rookie and Player of the Year. Before missing all but three games of the last two seasons, Griffin set NU single-season records with a stat line of 14-7-35 during the 2009 season.
Sophomore Paige Burnett returns as the keeper for the Huskies after stopping 102 shots last season while posting a 1.58 goals against average.
The Huskies are coached by Tracey Leone, who is in her third season at Northeastern. Leone owns an 18-18-3 record with the Huskies and a 107-57-7 all-time record.
Following Sunday night’s affair, the Terriers will travel to Dayton, Ohio, to take on the Dayton Flyers on Thursday, Aug. 23. The game will kick off the women’s College Game of the Week series and will be broadcast on the Fox Soccer Channel. First kick is set for 7:30 p.m.
