BOSTON – Former Boston University women’s basketball standout Rachael Vanderwal (’06) recently repeated as the Player of the Year for the women’s Irish SuperLeague.
Vanderwal, who won the award for the second consecutive season, plays for the University of Limerick Huskies. The point guard led her team to their third straight SuperLeague title with a 78-56 victory over DCU Mercy in the Women’s SuperLeague Final.
Vanderwal was named game MVP after leading all players in the championship with 23 points. She was also honored as the Women’s SuperLeague Player of the month in March.
The 2006 graduate from BU's School of Education left Boston to play overseas in the Irish Women's SuperLeague after graduation. She spent her first two seasons with Donoughmore (Cork), where she won back-to-back cup and league titles. After spending a season with Iona (Cork), Vanderwal signed with the University of Limerick and led the league in scoring.
Vanderwal spent the summer of 2012 representing Great Britain, her mother’s native country, as she was on the 12-player roster for Great Britain’s inaugural Olympic team that participated in the 2012 London Games.
The former Terrier finished her career at BU in 2006 as an America East All-Conference First Team selection while ranking in the top 10 in the league in points, rebounds and assists. She helped the Terriers win the 2003 America East title followed by three straight conference championship appearances.
