BOSTON - After signing five recruits last winter, the Boston University softball team has added three more newcomers for the 2014 season, second-year head coach Kathryn Gleason announced Wednesday. Incoming freshman Gabi Martinez is a utility player from the University School of NSU in Florida, while redshirt freshman catcher Kelly Plescow and sophomore pitcher Melanie Russell are transfers from South Carolina and UC Davis, respectively.
During her senior year, Gabi Martinez earned All-County First Team honors from both the Miami Herald and the South Florida Sun-Sentinel. A native of Weston, Fla., she helped her team win two district titles.
"We are very excited for Gabi to join our BU Softball Program," said Gleason. "She will bring versatility to our defense, as well as contribute in the offensive lineup. In high school and in her time with the Diamond Dusters travel ball organization, she has played at the corner, catcher and in the outfield as well."
Kelly Plescow enrolled at South Carolina last fall after a successful four-year career at Lake Braddock Secondary School. A native of Burke, Va., she earned All-Region Second Team honors as a catcher and served as team captain her final two years while also playing field hockey.
"Kelly comes from a very successful travel ball program in the Vienna Stars," said Gleason. "She is a tremendous athlete who chose BU because of the academic reputation. She will assist in the development of our pitchers in their bullpen workouts, as well as in practice and games."
Melanie Russell spent two years at UC Davis and reshirted the 2013 season. As a freshman, she made 11 appearances in the circle and struck out 14 batters in 20 innings. A native of San Diego, Calif., she helped lead Scripps Ranch H.S. to three consecutive first-place league titles in the San Diego Section with an appearance in the 2011 CIF Division II semifinals.
"Melanie is a pitcher with collegiate experience who competed with the Next Level out of California," said Gleason. "We will look to Melanie to join our young pitching staff and contribute on the mound."
With the three additions, the Terriers' roster increases to 18 student-athletes, as BU prepares for its inaugural season in the Patriot League. Key returnees include 2013 America East Player of the Year Jayme Mask and All-Conference infielders Brittany Clendenny and Megan Volpano.
