Thursday's links (at UMass Lowell): Live Stats
BOSTON - Coming off a 11-1 win over Holy Cross, the Boston University softball team will host Massachusetts on Tuesday before visiting UMass Lowell Thursday with both first pitches set for 4 p.m.
In Sunday's victory against the Crusaders, the Terriers (20-18, 5-4 PL) matched the combined 11 runs scored during their four-game losing streak. Despite the low scoring production, two of the defeats were decided by just one run.
BU enters the pair of midweek non-conference games batting a Patriot League best .310 with two Terriers in the top four. Two-time PL Rookie of the Week Brittany Younan went 7-of-13 (.538) in five games last week and now ranks second in the conference at .405, just ahead of senior Jayme Mask(.397).
Through 38 contests, the Terriers have outscored opponents, 195-155, with senior Brittany Clendenny (.289 avg) contributing a personal-best 35 RBIs. Both she and classmate Amy Ekart (.245 avg, 18 RBIs) are tied with 99 career RBIs, ninth most ever at BU. Senior Chelsea Kehr (.291 avg, 22 RBIs) leads the Terriers with 15 doubles, second most ever in a season at BU, while freshman Moriah Connolly (.333 avg) has 25 runs scored and combined for 50 stolen bases with Younan and Mask.
In the circle, sophomore Lauren Hynes (13-13, 3.81 ERA) pitched 61 straight innings until her two teammates returned this past weekend at Holy Cross after recovering from injury. During their absence, she pitched the Terriers to a pair of victories against both PL leader Lehigh and Army. Freshman Makinna Akers (4-2, 2.38 ERA) is holding opponents to a .267 batting average, while sophomore Melanie Russell (3-3, 2.60 ERA) has tallied 50 strikeouts in just 43 innings of work.
UMass (10-15) has won seven of its last games, including a doubleheader sweep over St. Bonaventure this past weekend by a combined score of 27-10. Quianna Diaz Patterson leads the Minutewomen with a .420 batting average, while Taylor Carbone (.321 avg) has a team-high 20 RBIs. Caroline Raymond (7-8, 3.11 ERA) is one of four pitchers to appear this season and has a team-high 40 strikeouts in 85.2 innings.
UMass Lowell (8-23) is currently in the middle of a three-game series with Binghamton at home that will conclude Tuesday afternoon. The River Hawks won the first match-up, 6-4, and earlier this season claimed a doubleheader sweep against Holy Cross. Brianna Martin is batting a team-high .333, while Abby Jamieson (.274 avg) has a team-high 15 RBIs. Marielle Handley (4-11, 3.82 ERA) has totaled nine complete-game performances, while Lauren Ramirez (2-7, 5.48 ERA) owns a team-high 55 strikeouts in 51 innings.
Following the midweek contests, the Terriers will travel to Colgate on Saturday to resume the Patriot League schedule.
