The Boston University Department of Athletics was well-represented at the 118th running of the Boston Marathon on Monday, as current staff members and many former athletes took part in the annual event.
Two former track & field and cross country standouts finished in the top 30 of their respective divisions as Andrea Walkonen ('10) placed 25th with a time of 2:37.06 while Eric Ashe ('11) took 30th with a time of 2:21.41. They were joined by fellow track & field and cross country alumni Robert Gibson, Peter Gilmore, Craig McMahon, Paul Ryan, Alicia Jack, Dina Conlan and Katie Ireland Cooper.
Former Terriers from five other teams also competed on Monday, including Krystyn McIntyre (women's basketball), Ryan Shea (men's soccer), Caitlin Webb (women's lacrosse), Ryan Weston (men's ice hockey) and Dan Lacouture (men's ice hockey). Women's soccer was represented by Meredith Beaton, Alice Binns, Farrell McClernon, Tayler Nichols and Emily Pallotta.
Athletic department staff members Dan Mercurio and Ellis Mair also participated in the race. Mercurio and Shea were each part of a group that ran in honor of BU graduate student Lu Lingzi, who died in the 2013 Boston Marathon bombings.
In addition to those that ran in the marathon, many members of the department's athletic training staff volunteered at the marathon, both at the finish line and along the course. Sixteen students joined 16 faculty and staff members in helping to provide care and assistance to the over 36,000 runners.
