ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Behind four victories on Saturday, the Boston University men's track & field team finished third at the Patriot League Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Saturday at Navy's Ingram Field.
BU finished with 139.50 points, comfortably ahead of fourth-place Army. The host Mids claimed first with 239 points, followed by Bucknell (176) in second place. The Terriers exceeded the expectations of the league's coaches and sports information directors, as BU was predicted to finish fourth in the preseason poll.
Freshman Justin Flynn was named Patriot League Rookie of the Meet after he earned two top-five finishes and was also part of two relay teams that earned points. His best performance was a second-place finish in the 100m dash with a time of 10.61 seconds.
Sophomore Alec Olson was among the four victors on Saturday, as he turned in a personal-best time of 8:59.14 to win the 3,000m steeplechase. Senior Rich Peters earned a win in the 1,500m run in his 2014 outdoor debut with a time of 3:44.68; Peters won all three events in which he entered at both the indoor and outdoor championships. Junior Ben Ravetz also picked up a point in the 1,500m run (3:53.17). Sophomore Kevin Thomas was also victorious, as he crossed the finish line first in the 5,000m run with a time of 14:35.82. Freshman Ethan Homan secured sixth in the 800m run with a time of 1:53.06.
Sophomore David Lagerberg won the 400m dash with a personal-best time of 47.61 seconds and was also second in the 200m dash (21.28). Flynn finished fourth with a time of 21.40 seconds, just edging classmate Cameron Williams (21.41), who took fifth. Williams also took seventh in the 100m dash with a time of 10.84 seconds.
Senior Stephen Vitale placed third in the 400m hurdles with a time of 54.11 seconds. The 4x100m relay team of Flynn, Williams, Lagerberg and freshman Alastair Prenn combined to take third with a time of 41.09 seconds. In the 4x400m relay, Vitale, Prenn, Flynn and Lagerberg finished sixth (3:22.74).
Two Terriers were in the top five of the decathlon, as senior Blake Edwards (6192) finished fourth, one spot ahead of classmate Nat Hinckley (5950). Freshman Sebastian Prieto Vasquez also earned a point in that event, as he finished eighth with 5263 points.
In Saturday's field events, junior Ethan Knight was third in the shot put with a personal-best toss of 16.10 meters while senior Connor Sullivan tied for third with a mark of 1.99 meters in the high jump. Sophomore Reuben Horace won the hammer throw on Friday for the Terriers' fifth victory of the weekend.
BU will be back in action next weekend at the New England Championships (May 8-10).
