WAKEFIELD, Mass. –
The three-time defending Hockey East champion Boston University women’s ice hockey team was predicted to finish first in the league’s preseason coaches’ poll, the conference announced on Monday.
BU received four first-place votes and finished with 53 points, two points ahead of Boston College, which took second with 51 points and the remaining four first-place nods. The Terriers defeated the Eagles, 3-2, in last year’s Hockey East title game. Northeastern placed third with 44 points, followed by Vermont (40), Providence (29), Connecticut (24), Maine (22) and New Hampshire (17).
The Terriers are the preseason favorites in Hockey East for the third time in their 10-year history; BU was also selected to finish first prior to the 2010-11 and 2011-12 campaigns. Nineteen returning letter winners and five freshmen will skate for the Terriers this season, including the nation’s top goal scorer from last season, junior Sarah Lefort.
The team's first exhibition contest of the season is slated for Saturday when the Terriers welcome Queens University to Walter Brown Arena. Puck drop is set for 3 p.m.
