Led by junior Michelle Sumner's
second-place performance, the Boston University women's cross country team opened the 2014 season with a victory at the Nassaney Invitational on Saturday morning at Bryant University.
BU collected 45 points on Saturday thanks to strong performances from all its runners. The Terriers were 16 points clear of second-place Boston College, which finished with 61 points. Holy Cross was the only other Patriot League school at the event, finishing fourth with 116 points.
Sumner was one of three Terriers to finish in the top 10. She placed second with a time of 18:04.2. Sophomore Sarah Saccoach was sixth (18:27.3) while junior Shelby Stableford finished seventh with a time of 18:34.5.
The Terriers' top-five harriers all placed in the top 20 of the event. Sophomores Hallie Armstrong and Felicia Sciortino crossed the finish line in 13th and 17th, respectively. Junior Rachel Lotterman was 19th while classmate Erin Pierce also had a strong day, finishing 23rd.
BU will be back in action on Sept. 27 when the Terriers take aim at the Ted Owen Invitational in New Britain, Connecticut.
