The Boston University men's rowing team will finally be back on the Charles River this Sunday when they take on rival Northeastern in a battle for the Arlett Cup. Originally scheduled for Saturday, the race was moved to Sunday due to a weather forecast calling for high winds.
The Terriers are looking to build off their performance last weekend when they raced against two of the top rowing programs on the west coast. The Terriers opened their season in Redwood City, Calif. by defeating the No. 12 Stanford Cardinal on Friday before falling to the No. 2 California Golden Bears on Saturday.
"BU and Northeastern have been racing each other since 1966, so there is a lot of history between the two programs," said men's head rowing coach Tom Bohrer. "We have a lot of respect for the Huskies, they always race hard, have good depth and are coached well."
The varsity eight race for the Arlett Cup will be the first race of the morning on Sunday with the Terriers looking to reclaim the Arlett Cup they last won in 2011. For junior co-captain Matt Maginnis, the race will be a big test against an old rival.
"It is good for us to get tough races in early on so we can make the changes when it comes to Eastern Sprints and IRAs," said Maginnis. "This is an important dual for both of our programs because we are so close."
The rivalry between the two schools dates back to their first meeting in 1966 with Arlett Cup being created in 1982. This year, with BU recently ranked No. 8 in the country and Northeastern No. 7, the two schools are evenly matched and ready to battle again.
"Our boats are ready to race," added Bohrer. "We hope to push our bow balls across the line first on Sunday."
