BOSTON - Sophomore David Amirani scored in the 51st minute and junior Matt Gilbert recorded three saves to help the Boston University men's soccer team claim a 1-0 victory over UMass Lowell at Nickerson Field Wednesday night.
Extending its unbeaten streak to three games, the Terriers improve to 5-2-1, while the River Hawks fall to 5-4-0 after the first meeting between the two programs since 1981.
UML had a slight 6-5 advantage in shot attempts in the first half despite BU owning a 4-0 lead in corner kicks. The Terriers would not need a corner in the second though to end the scoreless deadlock, as Amirani collected a pass from freshman Magnus Benediktsson and rifled a 12-yard shot that deflected off a River Hawk and went inside the right post.
With his first goal of the season, Amirani has now posted four game winners for the Terriers, while Benediktsson earned his second career helper.
Gilbert stopped two shots in the first 45 minutes, including a point blank attempt from Edward Venta-Yepes in the 30th minute, and made his final one at 74:14. The River Hawks managed to get a through ball past a BU defender, forcing Gilbert to come out and stop a hard shot from the right side of the box.
BU had some help in the 86th minute as Wuilito Fernandes lofted a 30-yard shot that had enough air to get over Gilbert and hit the right post before being cleared away. Fernandes had one more look at 87:19 from 25 yards out on a free kick but sailed the ball well over the crossbar.
Losing for just the second time in six contests, the River Hawks finished with a 16-11 advantage in shots, while BU had a 5-3 lead in corner kicks. Austin Kroll stopped two attempts in the loss, as junior Felix De Bona led BU with three shots.
The Terriers will next begin a two-game conference road trip at American on Saturday (Oct. 3) at 1 p.m.
