The No. 18/19 Boston University men's lacrosse team will host Colgate on Saturday afternoon at Nickerson Field. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
BU (5-1, 1-0) is in the midst of its best start in program history, which continued last week thanks to a 10-8 win at Canisius. The Terriers have held each of its last two opponents to under 10 goals while scoring 10 in each contest.
The 5-1 start has garnered BU national attention as well. The Terriers moved up to No. 18 in the Inside Lacrosse media poll and entered the USILA Coaches poll for the first time in program history at No. 19. If the Terriers win on Saturday, it will mark the second time this season that BU has won three straight games.
Two Terrier rookies were recognized by Inside Lacrosse this week on the magazine's 2016 Early Season Division I Freshman Rankings. Brendan Homire was ranked 14th while James Burr was selected at No. 11 out of 25 freshmen. The duo has been responsible for the Terriers' last two game-winning goals, as Burr notched a double-overtime winner against Navy on Feb. 27 and Homire tallied the team's final three goals of Saturday's game at Canisius to help BU complete its second fourth-quarter comeback in as many games.
Junior Sam Talkow is also part of the national conversation again thanks to his strong play at the faceoff X. He is seventh in the nation and first in the Patriot League with a percentage of .663. BU is tied for 10th in the country as a team at .614, with senior Elliott Burr going 5-of-8 at the X at Canisius to help bolster that number.
Colgate improved to 3-2 after a 7-6 win over Hobart on Tuesday. The Raiders are 1-1 in Patriot League play with an 11-10 overtime win over then-No. 20 Bucknell on Feb. 27 and a 12-9 loss at Lehigh on March 5. Saturday’s game will be the third straight road contest for Colgate.
Chase Wittich leads Colgate with 10 goals and is second with 12 points behind Sam Cleveland and his 13 points (7g, 6a). Reigning Patriot League Rookie of the Year Anthony Abbadessa has nine points (7g, 2a). Brandon Burke is 3-2 in five starts with a .539 save percentage and 8.15 goals-against average.
Following Saturday's game, BU will begin a three-game road stretch at Bucknell on March 19.
