ORANGEBURG, S.C. -
Concluding a seven-match road trip, the Boston University men's tennis team fell at defending MEAC champion South Carolina State, 5-2, on Saturday afternoon.
The Bulldogs (3-4) won two of three doubles matches for the first point and then claimed four singles points to defeat the Terriers (5-7).
In doubles, juniors Lucas Bombonatti and Mario Sandoval posted a 6-1 win in the No. 3 slot, but SCSU claimed the 6-1 victory at No. 2 to leave the point up for grabs. The Bulldogs got the needed break to edge juniors Jake De Vries and Jay Leelavanich, 6-4, at line 1.
Leelavanich rebounded from the doubles loss with a dominating 6-1, 6-1 win against All-MEAC honoree Martin Figura in the top singles slot. De Vries dropped the first set at No. 6 but rallied for a 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 win.
Freshman Satyajit Simhadri tried to mount a rally at No. 3 but came up just short, 6-2, 2-6, 6-3. Sandoval was in a tough three-set battle that saw the Bulldogs come out ahead, 6-7(6), 6-4, 6-4.
BU will next return home to host Patriot League rival Holy Cross on Friday (March 18) at 3 p.m. The regular-season matchup will have added significance, as a point in the first annual Turnpike Trophy all-sports competition will be up for grabs between the two schools.
