The past two Hockey East champions will meet for a spot in this year's semifinals when ninth-ranked Boston University visits 11th-ranked UMass Lowell in a best-of-three Hockey East quarterfinal series beginning on Friday (March 11) at the Tsongas Center.
The opener on Friday will start at 7:30 p.m. and will be televised nationally on the American Sports Network and locally on NESN. Game two on Saturday will start at 7 p.m. and a third game on Sunday, if necessary, will take place at 4 p.m.
The teams split their home-and-home series during the regular season on Feb. 12-13 with each team winning at its home rink. BU opened the weekend with a 2-1 overtime victory before the River Hawks responded with a 6-3 win the following night at Tsongas.
BU, the No. 5 seed, is coming off a sweep of 12th-seeded Massachusetts in the Hockey East opening round. The Terriers earned a 2-1 overtime victory on Friday and then closed out the series with a 5-4 win on Saturday.
The Terriers and River Hawks finished tied for fourth in the Hockey East standings with identical 12-6-4 records but Lowell earned the No. 4 seed via a tiebreaker due to points earned against the No. 1 seed (Boston College).
Following their success this past weekend, the Terriers have now won six straight Hockey East tournament games, including a 5-3 triumph over UMass Lowell in last season's league title game.
That streak is the second-longest in program history as BU strung together nine straight Hockey East tournament wins in the mid-'90s thanks to back-to-back league titles in 1994 and 1995.
This will mark the first time in a dozen years the BU will be on the road for the Hockey East quarterfinals. In 2004, as the No. 8 seed, the Terriers upset top-seeded Boston College in three games.
