CENTER VALLEY, Pa. -
Following opening weekend for the 2016 Boston University women's soccer team, senior captain Rachel Bloznalis
earned Corvias Defensive Player of the Week honors, the Patriot League announced on Monday afternoon.
In the season opener against Arizona State on Friday night, Bloznalis anchored a defense that held the Sun Devils to no shots on goal throughout the second half, despite seven tries. It helped the Terriers spur an offensive flurry during the final 45 minutes, during which BU netted a goal and directed five more shots at the ASU goalie.
Her play against No. 15 Connecticut was exceptional and her composure throughout all 90 minutes helped the Terriers hold the Huskies scoreless for just shy of 89 minutes. In particular, she caught up to two break away Huskies and was able to block their point-blank shots to avoid adding to BU goalie Bridget Conway
's very full plate. Though a goal with 1:11 left in the second half would ultimately decide the match, the Terriers played an exceptional defensive game throughout, sparked by courageous play in the back field by Bloznalis.
The Terriers are back in action on Thursday night when they head to Hofstra for a 7 p.m. game at Hofstra Soccer Stadium. BU looks to remain undefeated against the Pride, as the Terriers lead the series record, 8-0-1.
