BOSTON - Sophomore
Chad Krys broke a scoreless tie with goals less than two minutes apart and classmate
Jake Oettinger stopped all 31 shots he faced to lead the No. 12/11 Boston University men's ice hockey team to a 2-0 victory over No. 6 Providence on Friday evening at Agganis Arena.
BU, which dropped a 3-0 road decision to the Friars last Saturday, evens its overall record at 4-4-1 and improves to 2-1-1 in Hockey East play. Providence now stands at 5-3-0 on the year with a 2-2-0 conference mark.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- BU rebounded from a slow start during which it allowed 11 of the game's first 12 shots.Â
- After a pair of scoreless periods, Krys got the Terriers on the scoreboard with a perfectly executed give-and-go with fellow sophomore Patrick Harper in the eighth minute of the third.
- Krys picked off a Providence pass in the neutral zone and passed off to Harper, who then returned the puck along the left side before Krys snapped a shot past PC netminder Hayden Hawkey from the foot of the left circle with 12:42 left in regulation.Â
- Moments later, Krys once again intercepted a pass and this time did all the work himself, streaking through the bottom of the slot, left to right, before pushing a backhand past Hawkey's reach at the 8:55 mark.
- Providence pulled Hawkey in favor of an extra attacker for the final two minutes of the game but could not solve Oettinger and the Terrier defense.
GAME NOTES
- This was the first two-goal game for Krys as a Terrier as he entered the night with five career tallies.
- Oettinger picked up his first shutout of the season after recording four last season as a rookie.
- The respective power-play units for both squads were held at bay with Providence going 0-for-5 and the Terriers coming up empty on all four of their chances with the man advantage.
- BU held a 35-31 shot advantage.
- Sophomore Dante Fabbro recorded seven blocked shots and currently leads the nation in that category this season with 30.
FROM COACH QUINN
- "I didn't care how we did it, what the score was, how it looked, we needed a win tonight. We needed to feel good about ourselves. Obviously our start tonight wasn't what we wanted [outshot 11-1 to start the game]. I thought we were a step slow and after we killed some penalties and in the last five minutes, we started playing better and spent some time in the offensive zone. I thought the next two periods we played much better and the third was our best period of the night. Obviously, Chad makes two great plays and our goalie looked like a big-time goalie.""Â
UP NEXT
- The Terriers will close out a home weekend on Saturday (Nov. 4) when they play host to crosstown rival Northeastern.
- Game time at Agganis Arena is set for 7 p.m.Â
