Terriers Defeat Brown, Win Michalson Cup



The Boston University men's rowing team opened their 2017 spring season on a high note, sweeping Brown in eights racing on Sunday. The day was highlighted by the varsity eight's performance in the final race of the day, as the Terriers jumped out to an early lead and held off a late charge by Brown to win the Michalson Cup for the first time since 2011.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • In the varsity eight race, BU jumped out to a very quick start and lead Brown by 5 seats at the 500 meter mark. Coxed by junior MacKenzie Hart and stroked by junior Max Ponsen, the 1V continued to extends its lead, pulling ahead by 6 seats at the halfway point. Brown began to make its move over the second half of the race, cutting BU's lead to 2 seats with just 500 meters to go, but the Terriers held off the furious Brown charge at the wire, winning by a deck with a time of 6:02.7 to Brown's 6:03.1.
  • In the second varsity eight race, BU got off the stake very fast and opened a full length lead over the first 500 meters. The Terriers, coxed by junior Justin Goucher and stroked by junior Jacob Barker, never looked back and extended the lead to open water by the 1000 meter mark. The BU 2V cruised to victory with a time of 6:13.0, well ahead of Brown's 2V (6:18.9).
  • Following a trend on the day, the BU's 3V also got out to an early lead, jumping ahead of Brown by 3 seats over the first 500 meters. Coxed by sophomore Jeane Garner and stroked by freshman Theodore Thun, the 3V lead by five seats at the 1000 meter mark. Brown closed over the second half of the race but could not overcome the early deficit as BU won with a time of 6:18.7 to Brown's 6:19.2.         
  • BU's fourth varsity eight boat was also victorious, helping BU sweep Brown in all four eights races on the day. Coxed by sophomore Sean Dooling and stroked by senior Peter Roberts, BU finished ahead of Brown by open water with a time of 6:23.3 to Brown's 6:28.3.  
  • In their lone victory of the day, Brown's varsity four boat defeated BU's V4 in the first race of the morning. Brown finished with a time of 7:05.0 while BU finished in 7:09.6.    
 
NOTES
  • With Sunday's victory over Brown in the Michalson Cup race, BU is now in possession of all six of its annual cups for the first time. The Terriers won its final five cup races last season and added the Michalson Cup to their impressive collection on Sunday.
 
NEXT UP
  • The Terriers take on arch rival Northeastern on April 9th and will look to win the Arlett Cup for the third-consecutive year.
