2017 Patriot League Tournament Central
Seeking its first Patriot League title, the fourth-seeded Boston University men's tennis team will open the conference tournament against Colgate on Friday with action slated to begin at 10:30 a.m. at Navy's USNA Tennis Courts.
In the event of inclement weather, competition will move indoors to the Tose Family Tennis Center.
The Terriers enter the event at 9-15 with a 2-2 mark against Patriot League competition. They posted a 4-3 win over No. 2 Navy for their first victory against the Midshipmen since joining the conference before falling to No. 3 Lehigh (4-3) and No. 1 Army (4-1), who is the defending conference champion.
BU won its last two matches of the regular season, a 6-1 victory over Bryant and a hard-fought 4-2 decision against No. 5 Colgate. Friday's contest will mark the first-ever meeting between the Terriers and Raiders in the PL tournament. Colgate is currently 10-8 with a 3-2 Patriot League record that features wins over No. 6 Bucknell (4-3), No. 8 Lafayette (7-0) and No. 9 Holy Cross (7-0). The Raiders fell to both the Terriers and No. 3 Lehigh (7-0).
Both squads fell in the quarterfinals last season with BU just missing out in its third-straight PL semifinal appearance in a tough 4-3 decision to Bucknell. The Raiders were eliminated by Lehigh, 4-1, and will now try to snap a three-match losing streak to BU. Colgate owns a slight 7-6 advantage in the all-time series.
Senior Lucas Bombonatti
is a three-time PL Player of the Week this season and leads the Terriers with a 9-13 record at No. 1 singles. During the dual season, classmate Mario Sandoval
has played at lines 3-6 and collected a team-high 13 singles victories with both freshmen J.P. Avila
and Marc Sable
also reaching double-digits. Senior Jake De Vries
and sophomore Satyajit Simhadri
have combined for 12 wins as well to help the Terriers.
In doubles action, Bombonatti and Simhadri own a 9-10 record in the No. 1 slot with De Vries and Sandoval posting a 6-8 mark at line 2. Avila and Sable have posted two wins together in their last three matches at No. 3 doubles.
Colgate is led by reigning PL Player of the Week Jacob Daugherty, who has won 13 of his last 14 matches.
The winner of Friday's match will face either No. 1 Army or No. 8 Lafayette on Saturday in the semifinals at 10 a.m. The last two remaining teams will face off for the automatic NCAA berth Sunday at 1 p.m.
