CAMDEN, NJ -
Highlighted by a gold medal performance by the varsity eight boat, the Boston University women's rowing team finished second to Navy at the Patriot League Championships in Camden, N.J. on Friday. BU advanced all of its boats to the grand finals, won gold in the varsity eight competition and bronze in the varsity four.
 
BU finished with 46 points, runner-up to Navy who won the PL Championship with 51 points. After the competition, BU's varsity eight boat was named Patriot League Boat of the Year.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Navy entered the final race of the day, the varsity eight grand final, as the regatta points leader with 27, while Bucknell was second with 22 points and BU was third with 19 points.
  • In the 1V grand final, Navy had a good start and led BU by three seats at the 500 meter mark. The BU 1V, coxed by Marlaina Miller and stroked by Annalise Routenberg, responded and pulled ahead of Navy at the 1000 meter mark. Despite Navy's best efforts, BU stretched the lead to open water and cruised to victory with a time of 7:11.96. Navy just held off MIT in a close battle for second with at time of 7:14.65, while MIT finished third (7:14.82).
  • BU earned 27 points for the 1V's victory and finished the competition with 46 points, second to 2017 PL Champion Navy's 51 points. Georgetown finished the regatta in third with 36 points while Bucknell was fourth with 34 points.
  • Earlier in the afternoon, the second varsity eight boat, coxed by Julia White and stroked by Melanie Norman, finished fourth in the second varsity grand final with a time of 7:44.10 to earn 12 points. Navy took the victory in the 2V grand final with a time of 7:25.96 and earned 18 points while Bucknell was second (7:41.27) and Holy Cross was third (7:43.46).
  • The varsity four, coxed by Jessica Grossman and stroked by Shannon McGurty, finished third in the V4 grand final with a time of 8:30.43 to win bronze and earn the Terriers seven points. Navy won gold with a time of 8:13.65 to earn nine points and Georgetown won silver with a time of 8:27.73 (8 points).
MORNING HEATS
  • In morning heat races, all three BU boats easily advanced to the grand finals. Just needing to finish in the top three, the varsity eight boat got things started off right by winning their heat with a time of 7:02.99, well ahead of second-place Georgetown (7:11.84), third-place Lehigh (7:20.31) and fourth-place Holy Cross (7:31.45).
  • The second varsity eight boat finished second in its heat with a time of 7:37.58, behind heat-winner Navy (7:33.36) and ahead of Holy Cross (7:41.46) and Lehigh (7:49.13).
  • The varsity four boat won its heat to advance, finishing with a time of 8:33.86, ahead of Bucknell (8:37.97), Lehigh (8:57.63) and Colgate (9:53.72).
