"The Windermere Cup is a great opportunity for our team to compete against world class competition at one of rowing's biggest spectator events," said Boston University head men's rowing coach Thomas Bohrer. "We have wanted to be part of this event for years and this year the timing lined up. Competition in men's rowing is fierce and getting to compete against high level crews is a challenge we welcome and believe will position us well going into the Championship Season. We hope that this event will be a lifetime experience for the guys on our team."
Also competing for BU, the second varsity eight and third varsity eight will compete against collegiate competition on Saturday. The 2V8 will race at 1:58 p.m. ET in the men's collegiate open eight race while the 3V8 will race in the men's collegiate freshman 8/3V8 at 2:05 p.m. ET.
In addition to the competition on Saturday, the Terriers will also take part in the "Montlake Night Sprints" on Friday evening. For the first time in the event's 33-year history, all boats competing in the men's and women's Windemere Cup races will race from the traditional finish line in the opposite direction as normal approximately 600 meters and finish at the old Washington Huskies' ASUW Shell House where Windermere Cup-related festivities will be held.
ABOUT THE WINDERMERE CUP
The annual spring rowing event on the Montlake Cut is held in conjunction with the Seattle Yacht Club's Opening Day parade, which signals the beginning of boating season in Seattle and draws thousands of spectators. The entire event is a joint effort between Washington Rowing, the Seattle Yacht Club and Windermere Real Estate, with Windermere serving as the title sponsor of the event.
The 2019 Windermere Cup also includes a number of events during the week leading up to race day. The Seattle Yacht Club's Opening Day parade through the Montlake Cut will immediately follow the racing. The regatta was founded in 1987 when Windermere Real Estate founder John Jacobi joined up with the University of Washington to create an annual rowing event. They wanted to bring the best team in the world to Seattle's Montlake Cut, which at the time was the Soviet Union. The Soviet Union brought both its men's and women's crews and won both races. After that, the precedent was set for what has become one of the world's premier rowing events.
ELITE COMPETITION FOR THE CUP
The German men have won the eight in the past two World Championships and won silver at the 2016 Olympics.
Washington's men have won the Windermere Cup 24 times in 32 seasons and also have won seven of the last 11 Intercollegiate Rowing Association varsity eight national titles.
