Lightweight Rowing Earns CRCA National Coach, Staff Honors
June 14, 2024 | Women's Lightweight Rowing
WILMINGTON, Del. – Adding to an impressive list of accolades from the 2024 spring season, the Boston University lightweight rowing team was recognized in the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association's national awards, the organization announced on Friday afternoon.
After her first year at the helm, head coach Mary Foster shares the Lightweight National Coach of the Year award with Princeton's Paul Rassam. She and assistant coach Elizabeth Hughes were selected as the Lightweight National Staff of the Year.
This marks the second-consecutive year that BU has earned a share of both the national coach and staff awards in the Lightweight category. The honor comes after Foster, Hughes, and the staff received the CRCA regional awards back on Monday (June 10).
The National Coach of the Year awards highlight coaches in Divisions I, II, and III in addition to Lightweight. Voted on by their peers, this award is designed to recognize head coaches who have had outstanding success during the current season, demonstrated great team improvement from the prior season, and demonstrated a high level of professionalism and integrity as a coach in our sport.
Foster and staff recently completed the 2023-24 campaign with a third-place team result at the 2024 IRA National Championship Regatta. In her first season at the helm, Foster helped guide double sculls duo Kylie Lough and Caroline Burchette to a national title, the fourth in program history in the entry. In addition, the Lightweight 4 received silver in the Grand Final at the IRA Championship for the first time since 2021.
Outside of the IRA Championship, BU captured the Konrad Ulbrich Team Trophy to win the Eastern Sprints back in May, winning the Lightweight Double and Four races while the Eight was third. The Lightweight 8 was also victorious at the Knecht Cup in April for the second-consecutive year in retaining the Danielle Kousoulis Memorial Trophy. Back in the fall, BU's Lightweight Championship 8 placed second in the event for the first time since 2017.
Following the end of the spring season, four Terriers were named CRCA Scholar-Athletes: seniors Rayna Kuthiala and Nina Palmer, and juniors Heather Shinn and Lulu Smith. Senior Maecy Rickman garnered CRCA All-American status as well for the first time in her career.
