Mildred Barnes Selected To U.S. Lacrosse Hall of Fame

BOSTON - Mildred Barnes, a nine-sport letterwinner at Boston University in the 1940's and 1950's, was named to the 48th class of the United States Lacrosse Hall of Fame as announced on Wednesday, June 22.

Barnes becomes the fourth Terrier to be named to the U.S. Lacrosse Hall of Fame. She joins Gretchen Schuler (inducted in 1994), Angela Tammaro (1996), and Anne Coakley (2000).

A well-rounded student-athlete while attending B.U., Barnes competed in nine sports including volleyball, basketball, fist ball, field hockey, lacrosse, softball, soccer, tennis, and badminton.

A five-time member of the U.S. Lacrosse National Team, Barnes represented the U.S. on tours of Great Britain and Ireland in 1954 and 1960. She also played in the competitive Boston Lacrosse Association from 1949 to 1961 while earning an undergraduate degree from B.U.'s Sargent College and a doctoral degree from B.U.'s School of Education.

Barnes went on to serve as a nationally-rated lacrosse umpire for 10 years and coached the sport at numerous colleges and clinics in the 1960's. In the 1970's, she was a professor of physical education at the University of Iowa.

Barnes was inducted in the B.U. Hall of the Fame in 1978.

The U.S. Lacrosse Hall of Fame class of 2005 includes Barnes, Jack Emmer, Norm Engleke, Gary Gait, Paul Gait, Susie Ganzenmuller, Tom Haus, Dottie Hayden, Mandy (Moore) O'Leary and Gillian Rattray. The honorees will be enshrined at the 2005 National Lacrosse Hall of Fame Induction Celebration on Saturday, Nov. 12, at the Grand Lodge in Hunt Valley, Md.
