BOSTON - Kayla Tutino will captain the 2015-16 Boston University women's ice hockey team, head coach Brian Durocher announced at the team's annual banquet on Sunday afternoon.
Tutino will be joined by assistant captains Sarah Lefort and Dakota Woodworth. All three Terriers will play in their senior seasons in 2015-16. Tutino was an assistant captain this past season and helped guide BU to a fourth straight Hockey East tournament title.
In addition to the announcement of next season's captains, the team handed out awards at the banquet held at the Trustees Ballroom in the Questrom School of Business. Six different Terriers were honored and the Class of 2015 was also recognized for their remarkable achievements.
Strength and conditioning coach Darcy Gould presented the Strength and Conditioning Athlete of the Year award to both Tutino and senior Shannon Doyle. Tutino also earned the Academic Honors Award, shared with sophomore goaltender Victoria Hanson.
Beth Smith ('92), president of the Friends of Women's Ice Hockey, presented the Unsung Hero Award to both Hanson and Tutino. Both players were instrumental in the Terriers' success, with Tutino tallying 14 goals and 23 assists for 37 points a year removed from a season-ending injury. Hanson earned the starting role heading into the postseason and was terrific in the Hockey East Tournament. She went 4-0 in her Hockey East tournament debut, including a 32-save performance in a 4-1 victory over top-ranked Boston College in the Hockey East title game.
Isabel Menard ('13) presented the Caroline Bourdeau Spirit Award to senior Sarah Bayersdorfer, whose presence on and off the ice played a key role for the team throughout her four years at BU. Meghan Riggs ('14) presented the Most Improved Player Award to junior Diana Bennett, who finished as a plus-9 and notched a career-high two points (1g, 1a) on the BU blue line.
Holly Lorms ('11) introduced senior captain Marie-Philip Poulin as the team's Most Valuable Player. Poulin, a First Team All-American and top-three finalist for the Patty Kazmaier Award, led the Terriers with 54 points (27g, 27a).
