This summer, GoTerriers.com will once again count down the top 12 achievements of Boston University teams and student-athletes from the previous year. Check back each Tuesday and Friday as we reveal this year's Terrier Twelve.
Â
For the ninth straight year, GoTerriers.com presents the Terrier Twelve, an annual summer countdown that highlights the department's top 12 accomplishments from the past season. With six conference champions, six NCAA qualifying teams and record-setting performances in the classroom in the mix, this year's list is full of impressive achievements throught the entire Boston University Athletics Department.
Â
Kicking things off at number 12 is BU Athletics' record-setting Giving Day this past April.
Â
After setting new standards in 2015, raising $110,555 in support of BU's 24 varsity programs, the Boston University community shattered the record this year on April 6, raising over $513,400 from 4,986 gifts by student-athletes, alumni, parents and friends over the course of a 24-hour period.
Â
The online giving challenge became historic for the department as the single biggest showing of philanthropy in BU Athletics history. The money donated to the department represented over a third of the more than $1.5 million raised throughout the BU campus.
Â
Two BU alumni – Mary Buletza (Questrom '80) and John Hupalo (CAS '82) – issued a set of challenges to get the competitive juices flowing between all of BU's varsity teams and supporters. With two gifts of $10,000, they generously sponsored an Athletics challenge. The four men's and women's teams that totaled the most unique donors throughout the 24 hours were given bonus funds, ranging from $4,000 to $1,000. Men's rowing and women's soccer finished in first place with 568 and 311 donors, respectively.
Â
The Athletics staff also joined in for the cause and, for the first time in school history, had 100 percent of its full-time employees make a gift in support of BU student-athletes. The unanimous support by the department came on the heels of the profound outpouring of donations from Terrier Nation.
