BETHLEHEM, Pa. -
Sophomore Paul Luevano of the Boston University men's cross country team claimed the 2017 Patriot League individual title on Saturday at the Patriot League Championship hosted by Lehigh.

Luevano is the first Terrier male since Jochen Dieckfoss in 2003 to win an individual conference championship. The Los Angeles native finished the 8K race with a time of 24:01.23, over 15 seconds ahead of the second-place competitor.

"Paul did a great job," head coach Paul Spangler said. "I'm proud of the work he's done. He put in a surge pretty early in the race that broke things open. After another surge around two miles he blew away from everybody and ran by himself the last three miles of the race."

BU finished third overall as a team with 79 points thanks to five harriers in the top 25. Army West Point won with 43 points, edging Navy (47). The Terriers were nine points clear of fourth-place American (88) and easily won a Turnpike Trophy over Holy Cross. The Crusaders were seventh with 230 points.

"The guys stepped up without having Brett Davidson in there," Spangler said. "It was our goal to come in and win and we didn't accomplish that, but we certainly did what we were capable of today. I'm pretty optimistic of the direction of the program and excited about the upcoming meets."

Junior Alexander Seal finished 16th with a time of 24:55.64, followed closely by sophomore Greg Pelose (25:01.10) in 18th. Junior Johnny Kemps placed 21st (25:07.41) and senior Cullin Burdett crossed the finish line in 25:12.06 to take 23rd.

Freshman Jonathan Fierro was 42nd with a time of 25:48.25, followed by junior Zachary Prescott (26:44.57) in 64th, freshman Scotti Hamilton in 77th (27:17.81), junior Liam O'Connell (27:21.80) in 81st and freshman Logan Broedner (27:40.94) in 83rd.

BU will next turn its attention to the NCAA Northeast Regional on Friday, Nov. 10, in Buffalo, New York.

"I think it could suit us a little bit better being a 10K over an 8K and we'll come off this meet feeling confident," Spangler said of the upcoming regional event. "I think we've got some longer distance guys. The training we've been doing is more conducive to longer races, which could give us a little bit of an advantage."
