CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - Five members of the Boston University women's soccer team earned All-Patriot League Honors, highlighted by
Rachel Bloznalis and
Anna Heilferty, who earned Defensive Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year honors, as announced by the conference Monday.
Bloznalis' second-straight selection as Defensive Player of the Year marks the third time in program history a Terrier has earned multiple conference Defensive Player of the Year honors. A graduate student from Upton, Massachusetts, Bloznalis was selected as the Preseason Defender of the Year for the second year in-a-row and once again delivered on the preseason prediction. In guiding on of the league's top backlines, Bloznalis helped the Terriers shut out eight opponents this season, including six Patriot League foes, and limited opponent's attacks to just 9.3 shots and 0.89 goals per game.
Heilferty also earned a major award as she became the third Terrier in program history to earn Patriot League Rookie of the Year honors. Hailing from Falls Church, Virginia, Heilferty has proven to be on of the most dangerous attacking threat in the league, and she leads all freshmen in the Patriot League with five goals and 12 points.
Christina Wakefield joined Bloznalis on the All-Patriot League First Team after a breakout season on the attack. A 2015 All-Patriot League Third Team selection, Wakefield has been BU's top scoring threat this season as she leads the team with 13 points and has netted a career-high five goals, including two game-winning strikes.
Julianna Chen earned her third straight and second career selection to the All-Patriot League Second Team after a dominant season at the midfield. A junior from Milton, Massachusetts, Chen helped guide BU's defensive to limit Patriot League foes to score just four goals over nine games. Also showing a nose for the goal, both of Chen's scores this season have proven to be the game-winner.
Fellow midfielder
Dorrie Varley-Barrett joined Chen on the All-Patriot League Second Team. The junior from Chelmsford, Massachusetts, was instrumental as an attacking midfielder, consistently moving the ball into the offensive third and setting up attacking chances. The honor marks Varley-Barrett's second straight All-League selection and first Second Team nod.
BU. the No. 3 seed in the Patriot League tournament, will host No. 6 Lafayette on Tuesday, Oct. 31 at 7 p.m.
