BOSTON – In a dominant all-around performance, the Boston University men's soccer team earned its second straight shutout as it registered its highest offensive output of the season in a 3-0 decision over Holy Cross in a Turnpike Trophy match Wednesday night at Nickerson Field.
Matt McDonnell,
Satchel Cortet and
Jerry Ozor each found the back of the net, while
Michael Bernardi earned his third shutout of the season.
Adam Sheikali earned Turnpike Trophy MVP honors after guiding the back line to limit Holy Cross to just seven shots on the night.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Finding its offensive tempo early in the game, BU was awarded a penalty kick in the 13th minute, which McDonnell converted as he drove the ball just inside the left post.
- Just under 10 minutes later, Mana Chavali struck a ball at the center of the 20-yard box that rocketed off a defender and sailed into the air. Satchel Cortet closed on the ball and drove a header from 12 yards out that slid past a pair of oncoming defenders and into the back of the net.
- Holy Cross threatened with a bicycle kick inside the box in the 62nd minute, but Bernardi was up for the easy save for what proved to be his lone stop of the night.
- Ozor put the finishing touches on the offensive onslaught as he drilled a one-timer from just over 20 yards out into the upper 90 in the 78th minute.
