BU Eliminated by Holy Cross in Patriot League Semifinal PK Shootout

BALTIMORE, Md. - The No. 2-seed Boston University men's soccer team came up just short in the Patriot League quarterfinals with a 0-0 draw that ended with No. 5 Holy Cross advancing on a 4-1 penalty kick shootout performance Friday night at Ridley Athletic Complex.

Crusaders Shootout: Carfora (Y), Ross (Y), Krause (Y), Rupp (Y)
Terriers Shootout: Cortet (N), McDonnell (N), Lampis (Y)

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After a cautious start by both teams, BU had several excellent chances in the closing minutes of the first half. Junior Nicki Wieners had two quality looks in the final five minutes but was denied on both by Holy Cross goaltender Henry Stutz.
  • The Terriers entered the locker room in a 0-0 deadlock despite a 7-4 advantage in shot attempts.
  • Sophomore BU goaltender Michael Bernardi kept the game scoreless in the second half when he stopped a long bouncing shot by senior forward Arlo Rupp's that nearly got over his head at 60:49.
  • In the 74th minute, BU sophomore Satchel Cortet gained possession of an errant pass inside the box and fired on net but the shot was blocked by Holy Cross' Edi Mujan to keep the game scoreless.
  • Holy Cross had several chances in overtime and was awarded four corner kicks in the two overtime periods.
GAME NOTES
  • Holy Cross had a big 8-0 advantage in corner kicks with four coming during overtime, while BU finished with a 14-11 advantage in shots.
  • Junior T.J. Butzke and Nicki Wieners led BU with three shot attempts each.
  • Avenging an earlier 3-0 loss at Nickerson Field, Holy Cross will play Colgate in the PL Championship game on Sunday (Nov. 12) at 3 p.m. after Colgate defeated No. 1 seed and host Loyola Maryland in overtime.
