Oettinger Adds One More Hockey East Weekly Honor
March 27, 2017 | Men's Ice Hockey
After a remarkable effort between the pipes in one of Boston University's most memorable postseason wins in recent history, freshman Jake Oettinger has been named the Hockey East Defensive Player of the Week for the third time this season.
In Friday's 4-3 double-overtime victory in enemy territory at the NCAA West Regional, Oettinger set a career high with 56 saves to help the Terriers come on on top against No. 10 North Dakota. Nineteen of his 56 stops came in the third period alone and he turned aside all 13 shots he faced after regulation.
Oettinger added 20 more saves in Saturday's season-ending overtime loss to No. 3 Minnesota Duluth to total 76 saves in the regional.
A Hockey East Second Team All-Star and a member of the league's All-Rookie Team, Oettinger finished his rookie year with a .927 save percentage and a 2.11 goals-against average. Those numbers are good for third and sixth, respectively, on BU's single-season lists.
In all, the Lakeville, Minnesota, native collected five Hockey East weekly honors over the course of the season (3 Defensive Player, 2 Rookie).
