McAvoy, a Hockey East First Team All-Star this season, will join the AHL's Providence Bruins on an Amateur Tryout Agreement (ATO) and make his professional debut this weekend.
In 38 games this season, McAvoy tallied 26 points on five goals and 21 assists. His two-year BU career saw him post eight goals and 43 assists for 51 points in 75 contests and his final goal as a Terrier came in double overtime to lift BU to a NCAA first-round victory over defending national champion North Dakota.
He was named an assistant captain for the final two months of the season and also filled that role for Team USA at the World Junior Championship, where he helped the American squad capture gold and was named to the All-Tournament Team.
McAvoy was selected 14th overall by the Bruins in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft.
