EASTON, Pa. – For the second consecutive Saturday, the Boston University softball team relied on the arms of freshman Kali Magane and senior Makinna Akers to claim a shutout doubleheader sweep, as the Terriers followed up on a thrilling 1-0 extra-inning win with a dominating 7-0 game-two victory at Lafayette.

After senior Rachel Levine's two-out RBI single, Magane ended her 11th and final inning of work with her third and fourth strikeouts of the day to help the Terriers (16-24, 8-3 PL) extend their conference-win streak to eight games and limit the Leopards (6-23, 3-11 PL) to just two hits. Akers tied a personal best with seven strikeouts while allowing four hits in her complete-game performance to give BU its fifth shutout in 11 Patriot League contests.

GAME ONE RUNDOWN
Final Score:
 Boston University 1, Lafayette 0 (11 inn.)
WP: Magane (9-10, 11.0 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 4 K, 5 BB)
LP: Thomas (4-5, 11.0 IP, 14 H, 1 R/ER)
BU Leaders: Levine (2-4 AB, RBI 1B), Connolly (4-6 AB)
Lafayette Leaders: Kane (2-5 AB)

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • In the program's longest game since a 4-3 13-inning NCAA elimination win over Iona in 2012, freshman Kali Magane out-shined reigning PL Pitcher of the Week Stephanie Thomas by opening the game with six no-hit innings.
  • BU's offense collected a combined 14 hits but stranded two on base in the fourth, fifth, seventh and 10th innings, respectively, before finally breaking the scoreless deadlock.
  • Junior Kaitlin Sahlinger got BU on the board by hitting a one-out single up the middle, reaching second on a ground out, advancing to third on a wild pitch and scoring on senior Rachel Levine's RBI single to center.
  • The Leopards' Mallory Kane collected both of her teams hits, including a lead-off single in the seventh ... Lafayette loaded the bases with two walks, but Magane ended the threat by inducing a foul out to right.
  • Lafayette earned two more walks in the 10th but was unable to get the ball out of the infield for the loss.

GAME TWO RUNDOWN
Final Score:
 Boston University 7, Lafayette 0
WP: Akers (7-8, 7.0 IP, 0 R, 7 K)
LP: Marinelli (0-7, 7.0 IP, 10 H, 7 R, 6 ER, 1 K, 3 BB)
BU Leaders: Wong (2-4 AB, 2 R, 2-R 3B), Sahlinger (2-3 AB, 2 RBI, 1 R), Morrow (1-4 AB, SOLO HR)
Lafayette Leaders: Thomas (2-3 AB), Kane (1-3 AB), Wensel (1-2 AB)

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Unlike the first game, BU needed little time to get on the scoreboard, just two at-bats in fact ... Senior Moriah Connolly walked, stole second and then swiped third as junior Jilee Schanda was walked to draw an errant throw from the catcher to put the Terriers ahead for good.
  • Junior Kaitlin Sahlinger pushed the lead to 3-0 in the second by plating classmate Emma Wong on a RBI double and reaching home on a wild pitch.
  • Sophomore Emily Morrow followed two innings later with her second homer of the season.
  • The Terriers put the game away in the seventh with three runs off four hits, including Wong's two-RBI triple down the left-field line and Sahlinger's RBI single up the middle.
  • Lafayette only once had a runner reach scoring position in the fifth with two singles, but Akers used one of her career-tying seven strikeouts to keep the Leopards off the scoreboard.
NEXT UP
  • BU will seek its third weekend-series sweep of the season when it faces Lafayette on Sunday at 12 p.m.
  • The Terriers are now 11-0 against the Leopards since joining the Patriot League in the summer of 2013.
