No. 18/19 BU Defeats Lehigh, 10-4, to Advance to PL Semifinals

BOSTON - Playing in the program's first-ever postseason game, the No. 18/19 Boston University men's lacrosse team defeated Lehigh, 10-4, in a Patriot League quarterfinal game Tuesday night at Nickerson Field.

ON TO BALTIMORE

  • With the win, the Terriers secured a semifinal appearance against second-seeded Army West Point on Friday night at 7:30 p.m.
  • Top seed Loyola Maryland will host the semifinals and championship game.
  • The Greyhounds will face fifth-seeded Holy Cross after the Crusaders defeated Navy on Tuesday night.

CAREER NIGHT FOR BURR

  • Sophomore James Burr recorded a career-high five points thanks to a career-high four goals and an assist on Tuesday.
  • It was Burr's second straight four-goal game.

ANOTHER MONSTER NIGHT FOR DEARTH, TOO

  • Senior Cal Dearth joined Burr with five points, scoring three goals and adding two assists.
  • Dearth also caused a turnover and gathered two ground balls in an all-around effort.
  • A unanimous First Team All-Patriot League selection, Dearth has tallied 12 goals over the last three games.

CARSON-BANISTER, DEFENSE DOMINANT

  • Senior Christian Carson-Banister made 11 saves on Tuesday and held Lehigh scoreless for nearly three full quarters.
  • The Mountain Hawks took a 3-2 lead just 47 seconds into the second quarter.
  • They did not score again until there was 26 seconds remaining in regulation; Carson-Banister and the defense kept Lehigh off the board for 43:47.
  • The four goals allowed is a program-record for BU in the team's stingiest-ever performance.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • BU answered an early Lehigh goal with markers from Burr and freshman John MacLean to take a 2-1 lead before Lehigh evened the score, 2-2, entering the second quarter.
  • Cody Triolo gave the Mountain Hawks a 3-2 lead, but Dearth answered with an unassisted goal off a failed Lehigh clear, and that's where the score stood at halftime.
  • The Terriers took over after the break, beginning with Burr's second strike of the game.
  • Junior Ryan Hilburn made it 5-3 when he fought through a check for his 15th goal of the year.
  • Dearth and MacLean each scored to make it 7-3 after the third stanza.
  • In the fourth quarter, Burr tallied twice more with Dearth also adding a marker to complete a stretch of three goals in 2:28 and give the Terriers a commanding 10-3 lead.
  • Lehigh added a late goal with just 26 seconds on the clock to complete the scoring.

GAME NOTES

  • Junior Jack Wilson extended his point streak to 41 games with an assist.
  • MacLean (2g, 1a) and Hilburn (1g, 2a) each finished with three points.
  • Senior Greg Wozniak had an outstanding game for the Terriers. He had a game-high three caused turnovers and collected six ground balls in one of his finest performances of the year.
  • BU caused 13 of the Mountain Hawks' 23 turnovers, with senior Henry Lee and sophomore Quintin Germain each contributing two apiece. Lee also gathered two ground balls, one of nine Terriers with at least two ground balls.
  • Sophomore Michael Laviano also had an assist.
  • The Terriers did not get flagged for a single penalty.

UP NEXT

  • BU, which improved to 13th in the RPI, will travel to Baltimore, Maryland, to face Army West Point in Friday's second semifinal at Loyola Maryland.
  • Opening faceoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
  • The game will be televised live on CBS Sports Network.
