BOSTON - When the Boston University Athletic Hall of Fame inducts six new members on Nov. 4, six others, including four alums and two active members of the athletic department, will also be recognized with special awards.
Previously announced Terrier standouts Bob Danville '82 (men's track & field), Matt Gilroy '09 (men's hockey), Robyn Kenney '01 (field hockey) and April Setterlund '11 (softball) will be joined by longtime distance running coach Bruce Lehane and former administrator Dick Fecteau '51 in this year's class, which will officially be inducted starting at 12 p.m. in the Francis Burke Club Room at Agganis Arena. Before they take to the podium, BU will recognize six others for their accomplishments and support of BU Athletics.
Following more than three decades of service to Boston University, men's basketball alum David Walko (CAS'68) will receive the Roger "Moose" Washburn Memorial Award, while current BU Athletics broadcaster Brian Maurer (COM'07) will be recognized with the Murray Kramer Memorial Award. Entering her 13th season at the helm, Boston University Director of Track & Field Robyne Johnson is this year's recipient of the William French Memorial Award.
BU Director of Athletics Drew Marrochello announced back in May at the annual Student-Athlete Awards Banquet that women's lacrosse's Charlotte Castronovo (Questrom'17) and men's tennis' Jake De Vries (COM'17) will be honored with the Aldo "Buff" Donelli Memorial Leadership Award. Finally, men's lacrosse senior Ryan Hilburn is the recipient of the Irv Heller BU Athletic Hall of Fame Scholarship.
The Roger "Moose" Washburn Award is presented to a graduate of Boston University who has given continuous unselfish support to the Boston University athletic program. Through 30-plus years of commitment to BU, Dave Walko (CAS'68) has played a key part in its progress over the years, including the birth of the Academic Support Center, the Fitness and Recreation Center, the John Hancock Student Village and Agganis Arena.
After graduating cum laude and spending six years as assistant to the Director of Admissions at BU, he was hired in 1983 by his mentor, former BU Athletic Director John Simpson, to become the Director of the BU Athletic Association, the department's fundraising arm. Walko, who had sat on the Board of the Varsity Athletic Club for years, was only the second director of the BU Athletics Annual Fund and held this position for over two decades until later becoming the Associate Director of Planned Giving. Previously recognized with the Joseph P. Mercurio Campus Community Recognition Award in 2008, he still remains an avid supporter of BU Athletics and continues to attend numerous athletic events.
Brian Maurer (COM'07) becomes the second BU alum in the last three Hall of Fame ceremonies to receive the Murray Kramer Award, which is presented to an individual or organization in recognition of outstanding media coverage or publicity of intercollegiate sports. Maurer has been enthusiastically covering BU Athletics and serving as a voice for the department for more than a decade now.
During his undergrad years, he first worked for WTBU, the on-campus student radio station, and called numerous events while also writing for the Daily Free Press. Shortly after graduating in 2007, he began helping as a public address announcer and during the 2008-09 season joined longtime radio announcer Doug Brown (COM'78) as a color commentator for the official men's basketball broadcasts. Besides working with Brown for the Patriot League Network and Terrier Sports Radio Network men's basketball broadcasts, Maurer has hosted numerous multimedia shows for BU Athletics, including Terriers Take 5 and BU All-Access. His efforts previously gained the attention of BU's next door neighbor, as the Red Sox invited Maurer on May 30, 2012, to serve as "The Voice" of Fenway Park for a game.
The William French Award is presented to a current or former Boston University coach or to a graduate of Boston University who has distinguished himself or herself in the coaching profession in the past year. Recently signing a multi-year extension over the summer, BU director of track & field Robyne Johnson just completed her 12th season with the Terriers, having built an impressive resume at both the collegiate and the international level.
In 2017 alone, three Terriers – Cameron Williams, David Oluwadara and Toria Levy – were named USTFCCCA All-Americans. Johnson also coached BU to a combined 22 gold medals at the indoor and outdoor Patriot League championship meets in 2017. The Terriers have thrived under Johnson's guidance, claiming a total of nine conference championships in track & field and five conference titles in cross country. Johnson has coached 21 All-Americans while at BU, including Williams, a two-time honoree who became the first sprinter in Patriot League history to be named an indoor All-American in 2016. Last summer on the international stage, Johnson served as an assistant coach for Team USA at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio. Under her guidance, the U.S. won gold and silver in the women's long jump at the same Games for the first time in Olympic history.
The Aldo "Buff" Donelli award is presented to a male and female senior who have demonstrated outstanding leadership both on and off the field. Serving as SAAC president and a captain of the women's lacrosse team last season, Charlotte Castronovo (Questrom'17) was a standout on defense for the Terriers. She started every game over the past three years and guided the team to four straight Patriot League tournament appearances. Along with her presence on the field, she was equally impactful off it. In her role as SAAC president, Castronovo organized numerous community service events for student-athletes while also spending time serving for the Salvation Army and Athletes 4 Autism.
Serving this past year as captain of the men's tennis team, Jake De Vries (COM'17) has been a staple for the program on and off the court the past four seasons. He helped guide the Terriers to three Patriot League semifinal appearances and collected more than 38 wins in both singles and doubles action over his career. In the classroom, he was named to three Patriot League Academic Honor Rolls and three times named an ITA Scholar-Athlete for boasting a GPA above 3.50. He also made valuable contributions to the community through his work with the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), including serving this past academic year as the Vice President. For his exemplary efforts on campus, he was awarded the prestigious Scarlet Key Award.
Ryan Hilburn owns the distinction of being the first men's lacrosse player to receive the Irv Heller Hall of Fame Scholarship, which is presented to an undergraduate or graduate student-athlete who exhibits good sportsmanship and citizenship. He has been a key contributor for the program the past three seasons, tallying a combined 94 points in 42 appearances. Last season, he made 11 starts and finished with 17 goals and a career-high 17 assists, as BU advanced to the Patriot League semifinals for the first time in program history. Off the field, Hilburn has participated in several community initiatives with the team, including the Bike to the Beach. Over the past three years, they have raised over $78,000 via a 100-mile bike ride to help raise awareness for autism. Besides participating in the Bloom Family Leadership Academy, he has also been involved with the One Love Foundaiton, an organization dedicated to helping everyone understand the difference between a healthy and unhealthy relationship.
