CALGARY, Alta. - Former Boston University women's ice hockey standout Marie-Philip Poulin has been named captain of the Canadian women's hockey team at the upcoming 2018 Olympic Winter Games in PyeongChang, South Korea.
"It's an honor to be selected to lead this group at the Olympic Winter Games and to wear the 'C' after so many inspirational leaders that have come before me," said Poulin. "This is a special group of 23 players and we're excited to hit the ice together for the first time in South Korea in a few days."
Poulin is just the third Terrier ice hockey player to captain an Olympic team. Mike Eruzione captained Team USA to a gold medal in 1980 while Clark Donatelli served as captain of the 1992 USA squad that finished fourth. Poulin was a two-time captain of the Terriers (2012-13, 2014-15) and served as an assistant captain during the 2011-12 campaign.
A 2015 BU graduate, Poulin has worn the 'C' for Canada since the 2015 IIHF Women's World Championship. She has a chance to win a third consecutive Olympic gold medal in February and become the first Boston University student-athlete to win an Olympic medal at three different Games. Poulin scored the game-winning goal in the last two Olympic gold-medal games.
Poulin is joined on the squad by Jenn Wakefield ('12), who also won gold with Poulin in 2014.
