Terriers Defeated by Holy Cross, 73-62

BOSTON – Despite sophomore Tyler Scanlon scoring a game-high 19 points, the Boston University men's basketball team suffered a 73-62 setback to Holy Cross in a Turnpike Trophy contest on Saturday afternoon at Case Gym.
Now tied for third in the Patriot League standings with Navy, the Terriers fall to 12-13 (8-6 PL), while the Crusaders improve to 9-16 (6-8 PL).

- After Scanlon hit a layup and a 3-pointer on back-to-back possessions to help the Terriers pull within five (49-44) at 9:58, the Crusaders went on a 6-0 spurt over the next three minutes to pull away for the win.
- Down by as many as 15 (67-52), BU tried to mount a rally and cut the double-digit deficit to seven at 55 seconds on Scanlon's fourth trey of the game, but the Crusaders drained a pair of free throws and a layup to seal the victory.
- In a contest featuring 10 lead changes, Austin Butler scored on a layup to give the Crusaders a 12-11 advantage at 12:55.
- Over the next six minutes, the Terriers went on a 14-4 run with the help of six free throws, including two by senior Cedric Hankerson at 6:47.
- The Crusaders finished the half though with a 16-4 run, capped by Patrick Benzan's steal and buzzer-beating layup for the 32-29 halftime lead.
- BU came out attacking retook the lead, 36-34, on senior Will Goff's 3-pointer at 17:50, but the Crusaders went on another run (15-3) capped by Jehyve Floyd's slam dunk at 12:05 for the contest's first double-digit lead.
- Both Scanlon (19 pts., 8 rebs.) and Hankerson (11 pts., 9 rebs.) nearly had a double-double, as the Terriers out-rebounded the Crusaders, 39-30.
- BU welcomed back Hankerson (28 minutes) following a five-game absence but continued to be riddled by injury, as both freshman Walter Whyte (8.7 ppg, 5.1 rpg) and senior Eric Johnson (4.7 apg, 3.0 rpg last three games) missed the contest.
- Sophomore Max Mahoney contributed 10 points and six rebounds, while senior Nick Havener had six points and seven boards.
- The Terriers were limited to 22 points in the paint, their second fewest of the season following an 18-point performance at UConn on Nov. 19.
- Shooting 62.3 percent on the season at the charity stripe, BU had its best performance of the season at 19-of-24 (.792), but the Crusaders were nearly perfect at 16-of-17 (.941).
- Benzan went 9-of-10 at the line en route to 15 points, while Floyd had 18 points, four blocks and five rebounds for Turnpike Trophy MVP honors.
- Though the Terriers only had three more turnovers (14-11), they were outscored in points off turnovers, 14-4.
- The Crusaders improved to 54-19 all-time by snapping a four-game losing streak in the series.
- BU maintains a 7-4 advantage in the Turnpike Trophy standings with women's basketball claiming a 64-58 road win on Saturday.
- BU will hit the road again with a flight south to American on Wednesday (Feb. 14) at 7 p.m.
- The Terriers already avoided being swept by Loyola Maryland and will now try to avenge an earlier 69-58 loss to the Eagles.
