Boston University Well-Represented in 2018 Stanley Cup Playoffs
April 11, 2018 | Men's Ice Hockey
Eleven former Boston University players - two head coaches and nine skaters - have advanced to the 2018 National Hockey League Stanley Cup Playoffs, which begin on Wednesday.
Of the five head coaches in this year's playoffs who played NCAA hockey, the Terriers have two of them. Mike Sullivan '90 is looking to win a third straight Stanley Cup as head coach of the Pittsburgh Penguins while John Hynes '97 has led the New Jersey Devils to the playoffs for the first time since 2012.
Nine Terriers across five teams will all be looking to capture the sport's top prize. The Colorado Avalanche, who captured the second Western Conference wild card spot with a win in their final game, have three Terriers on their roster in Matt Nieto, David Warsofsky and Colin Wilson. They will open their playoff quest against Nick Bonino and the Nashville Predators, who claimed the Presidents' Trophy with 117 points. Bonino is in his first season in Nashville after winning two Cups with the Penguins.
The Boston Bruins' impressive 112-point regular season was aided by a pair of rookie defensemen from BU as Charlie McAvoy and Matt Grzelcyk are ready to take on the Toronto Maple Leafs in the opening round. Another team with two Terriers is the Minnesota Wild, as Jordan Greenway will make his playoffs debut on Wednesday alongside Charlie Coyle when they take the ice against the Winnipeg Jets.
Alex Chiasson is in his first season with the Washington Capitals, who will host the Columbus Blue Jackets in the opening game of their series on Thursday.
