WORCESTER, Mass. – Highlighted by freshman
Ali DuBois' eight strikeouts and senior
Jilee Schanda's three runs scored, the Boston University softball team opened the Turnpike Trophy series at Holy Cross with a 5-0 win on Friday afternoon.
DuBois (16-6) limited the Crusaders (8-22, 2-5 PL) to just four hits, while both juniors
Emily Morrow and
Alexa Ponce collected two RBIs apiece to help the Terriers (23-17, 5-2 PL) extend their win streak to five games.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Holy Cross had a great opportunity to get on the scoreboard first in the opening inning when Taylor Wahler reached second on a one-out single and throwing error.
- Mandy McCarthy followed with a single to center, by Schanda threw a bullet to junior catcher Alex Heinen to tag out Wahler at home.
- Schanda then started the second with a single and eventually scored on Ponce's double to right center.
- HC had one more opportunity in the third with a walk and hit-by-pitch, but DuBois got a groundout and strikeout to end the threat.
- Schanda set the table again in the fourth with a single, stolen base and run scored on senior Kaitlin Sahlinger's RBI grounder.
- Morrow singled to center to plate Sahlinger and extend the lead to 3-0.
- The Terriers added two more runs in the seventh off Ponce's bases-loaded two-out walk and Morrow's infield single.
- DuBois allowed just one hit in the final four innings and finished the contest with a pair of strikeouts.
