WINCHESTER, Mass. - Continuing Patriot League play, the Boston University men's tennis team rebounded from a hard-fought 4-1 loss to Lehigh with a 4-0 win over Holy Cross on Sunday afternoon at the Winchester Indoor Tennis Club.
With the doubleheader split, the Terriers move to 12-11 (2-2 PL) for their most wins in a season since going an identical 12-11 in 2006-07. The win against the Crusaders also helped extend BU's lead in the Turnpike Trophy all-sports competition featuring the two schools to 14-4.
MATCH 2: BU 4, Holy Cross 0
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Terriers won two doubles matches for the first point and then captured three singles points in straight sets for the team victory.
- Freshman David Bogatin teamed with sophomore Fabian Soemarno for a 6-1 win in the No. 1 slot.
- Bogatin carried momentum from the doubles win to a dominating 6-0, 6-2 singles victory at line 2.
- Both freshman Pedro Gutierrez (#3) and sophomore J.P. Avila (#6) dropped just one game apiece in their respective dominating singles performance to seal the Terriers' victory.
- Freshmen Owen Lu (#1) and Ethan Kolsky (#5) teamed together for a 6-3 win at No. 2 doubles and were leading comfortably in singles when their respective matches were halted.
- Named Turnpike Trophy MVP, Avila was ahead in his No. 3 doubles match with Lu as well when that contest was halted.
MATCH 1: Lehigh 4, BU 1
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Terriers captured the doubles point, but Lehigh rallied by winning four singles points, including two in straight sets.
- Lu and Kolsky cruised to a 6-1 win at No. 3 doubles before Soemarno and Bogatin edged the Mountain Hawks in the top slot, 7-5.
- Four of the six singles matches went to a third set with two ending incomplete.
- Lehigh captured a pair of points in straight sets at lines 5 and 6 before Jack Peterson rallied from a set down to beat Lu, 1-6, 6-2, 6-0 in the No. 2 slot.
- Jacob Edelchik also rallied from a set down to defeat Bogatin, 2-6, 7-5, 6-3 at line 3 to seal the Mountain Hawks' victory.
- Senior Satyajit Simhadri led in the third set of the No. 1 match, while freshman Pete Siozios (#4) was tied in his respective third set when Lehigh pulled out the team win.
NEXT UP: BUCKNELL
- The Terriers will conclude the regular season at Bucknell on Saturday, April 21, with a 12 p.m. start time.
- The teams are meeting for the first time since the Bison eliminated BU, 4-3, in the 2016 PL quarterfinals.
