Terriers Finish Sixth at Eastern Sprints

WORCESTER, MA – Highlighted by a sixth-place team finish and a silver-medal performance by the varsity four boat, the Boston University men's rowing team competed at the Eastern Sprints at Lake Quinsigamond on Sunday.

On the day, the Terriers had three boats compete in the grand finals, won silver in the varsity four grand final and finished in sixth place in the Rowe Cup team competition.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Varsity Eight
  • The varsity eight boat, coxed by Sean Dooling and stroked by Ole Bang Andreasen, qualified for the grand final by finishing second in its morning heat race, finishing just 1.7 seconds behind heat-winner Yale and ahead of crews from Syracuse, George Washington and Navy.
  • In the grand final, the No. 6 seeded Terriers took on No. 1 Yale, No. 2 Brown, No. 3 Harvard, No. 4 Northeastern and No. 5 Princeton. Yale jumped out to an early lead in the championship race followed by Brown and Princeton who battled for second. Yale continued to pull away from the pack as BU and NU battled it out for fifth. Yale won by open water with a time of 5:54.66, followed by Harvard (5:58.07), Brown (5:58.23), Princeton (5:58.72) and NU (6:01.17). BU finished sixth with a time of 6:03.60.
Second Varsity Eight
  • BU's No. 7 seeded second varsity eight finished third in an extremely close morning heat race. No. 1 seeded Northeastern finished first with a time of 5:47.96 while BU and No. 6 Dartmouth crossed the finish line together. After a review by the judges, Dartmouth edged BU by .12 seconds in a photo finish and BU moved on to the afternoon's petite final.
  • In the petite final, the Terriers took on No. 10 Cornell, No. 13 Navy, No. 11 George Washington, No. 8 Syracuse and No. 9 Wisconsin. Syracuse and Wisconsin got out to the early lead while BU battles Cornell for the third spot. The 2V8, coxed by Justin Goucher and stroked by Paul Giroux, pulled ahead of Cornell at the 1000m mark but the Big Red caught the Terriers and the two battled for third over the final 100 meters, with Cornell edging BU for third by a bow ball. Syracuse won the petite final with a time of 6:04.08, followed by Wisconsin (6:08.63) and Cornell (6:12.42). BU finished just .4 seconds in back of Cornell (6:12.82) and ahead of George Washington (6:19.26) and Navy (6:26.84). 
Third Varsity Eight
  • The No. 8 seeded third varsity eight finished second in the morning heat behind Princeton and ahead of Brown and Cornell and moved on to the grand final. In the grand finals, BU raced against No. 1 Yale, No. 4 Northeastern, No. 3 Harvard, No. 2 Princeton and No. 7 Dartmouth. Princeton and Yale got off to an early lead and the race was on for third place among the four remaining boats. The BU 3V8, coxed by Chloe Jacobs and stroked by Andrew Marsh, pulled ahead of the pack and into sole possession of third place at the 1000m mark and held the bronze position entering the final 500. But Harvard made their move down the stretch and pulled even with the Terriers with 100m to go and the two boats battled to the wire for bronze as Harvard just edged BU for the third spot by .8 seconds. Yale won gold with a time of 5:48.62 followed by Princeton (5:49.22) and Harvard (5:54.42). BU was fourth with a time of 5:55.06, ahead of Northeastern (5:57.72) and Dartmouth (5:59.62).
 
Varsity Four
  • The Terriers' varsity four, coxed by Nick Meehan stroked by Michael Boston competed in the grand final with no qualifying heat race. The V4 finished second to win silver with a time of 6:47.46, just behind race-winner Northeastern (6:45.27) and ahead of crews from Syracuse (7:07.88), Yale (7:13.69), Penn (7:21.46), and Holy Cross (7:23.63).

  • On the day, BU finished with 21 points and in sixth place in Eastern Sprints Rowe Cup points standings. Yale won the overall Rowe Cup team title with 39 points
