British-born Dave Hemery reached the zenith of his brilliant track career by winning the 1968 Olympic Gold Medal in the 400-meter hurdles in world-record time.

He was also an NCAA 400-meter champion and twice an All-America selection.

He was named "European Runner of the Year" in 1969, and was awarded the Order of the British Empire by Queen Elizabeth.
