The University's 1990 Female Athlete of the Year, Sally Maxwell's individual talents and determination helped establish the Terrier field hockey team as a perennial contender for national honors.

After seeing action in 11 games during her freshman campaign, Maxwell directed the club to a 12-7-2 mark and its only ECAC Championship during the fall of 1987. She received First-Team All-New England and Most Improved Player honors after scoring a team-leading seven goals and adding five assists for a team-leading 19 points. Maxwell set up the game-winning goal in the Terriers 1-0 triumph over Lock Haven in double overtime of the ECAC Finals, and added a goal in the 2-0 semifinal win over Dartmouth.

Maxwell continued her stellar play as a junior, and had the club eyeing an NCAA Tournament bid after commencing the year with a 7-0-1 start. However, a series of late season, narrow losses to regional opponents left the Terriers out of the national championships, despite an impressive 10-6-1 mark. Maxwell, who finished second on the club with six goals and two assists for 14 points, received Honorable Mention All-America, First Team All-New England, and Boston Four All-Star recognition.

During her senior year, the club again jumped out to a quick start, compiling an 8-2 slate through 10 games, and assured itself a spot in the NCAA Tournament by downing Northeastern and Connecticut in the final week of the regular season. In their second appearance in the national tournament, the Terriers hosted UMass-Amherst in the opening round, and played to a scoreless tie through three overtimes, before being eliminated on penalty strokes.

In recognition of her stellar play throughout the year, Maxwell received First Team All-America, First Team All-New England, First Team All-North Atlantic Conference and the Boston Four, and received the Mildred Barnes Award as the University's Outstanding Female Athlete and earned Scarlet Key recognition.

Maxwell finished her career with 18 goals and 16 assists for 52 total points.
