January 22, 2000 | Men's Wrestling
After picking up its first win of the season with a 31-9 rout of Springfield College on Wednesday, the Boston University wrestling team followed with another impressive performance, overpowering East Stroudsburg University, 25-11, at "The Roof" on January 22.
The Terriers won the first six matches of the meet to establish an insurmountable 22-0 lead. Junior Malik Elliott (149), senior Chris Simmons (157), sophomore Ali Abri (174), and freshman Chad Grant (184) all won by major decisions during this stretch.
Junior Zak Emond (165) also picked up a decision, and freshman Ed Strauss (197) won in sudden death to give Terriers a 22-point advantage.
After East Stroudsburg's Rich Keohler won by technical fall at heavyweight to put the Warriors on the board, Boston University's Jose Leon provided one of the day's highlights for the Terriers at 125. Leon, a freshman, earned a 9-5 decision over Jeremy Sluyter, who is a senior and ranked 15th in the country.
Boston University coach Carl Adams lauded Leon's effort, saying it shoud establish him as one of the top wrestlers in the nation at his weight class.
Adams also praised the entire team's efforts, particularly Grant and Strauss, who overpowered far more experienced wrestlers.
The win brings the Terriers' record to 2-4-1, while East Stroudsburg drops to 7-4. The team will next take to the mat against Army on Saturday, January 29, at 5:00 pm on "The Roof."
