BOSTON -- The Rider University Broncs showed why they are the top-ranked team in the East Coast Wrestling Association as they overpowered Boston University 29-8 at Case Gym on February 12.
Major decisions by freshman Mike Messina at 133 pounds and senior Chris Simmons at 157 gave the Terriers their only points of the day, with the other eight matches going to Rider.
Rider ended a six-meet winning streak the Terriers held coming into the match.
Also coming to an end was Terrier freshman Jose Leon's nine-match winning streak at 125, and teammate Rich Wilson's string of four consecutive pins at heavyweight.
The Bronc's jumped ahead with Jerold Limongelli's narrow 10-9 decision over Leon, and went ahead for good when P.J. Sargent pinned the Terriers' Francisco Ugalde at 141.
The next three Rider wins came by a total of five points. Derek Jenkins used an overtime takedown to defeat Malik Elliott, 3-1, at 149. R.J. Haynes earned a 3-2 decision over Zak Emond at 165, and Keith Blose followed with a 5-3 win over the Terriers' Ali Abri at 184.
Rider's Shawn Scannell, ranked 12th in the nation, and Todd Palmisano, won major decisions at 184 and 197, before heavyweight Marc DeFrancsesco, ranked 5th in the country, closed the meet with a 6-1 decision over Wilson.
The loss drops the Boston University to 6-5-1 on the season, and 3-2-1 in the ECWA.
Head coach Carl Adams' club will close out the regular season when it hosts cross-town rivals Boston College and Harvard on Friday, February 18, and Saturday, February 19.
