Terrier Wrestlers Take Down Springfield
January 19, 2001 | Men's Wrestling
BOSTON -- Senior Zack Emond (Lake Zurich, IL), sophomore Josh Sigmon (Bethlehem, PA) and junior Ali Abri (Ashland, PA) each earned pins to help lead the Boston University wrestling team to its first win of the season, 34-13, over Springfield College on January 17.
Sigmon's match at 174 pounds was particularly eventful, as his opponent, Jeremiah Fountain, appeared to have the match in control and Sigmon on the verge of being pinned. Both combatants' shoulders were close to the mat, and when the referee signaled for the pin, Fountain jumped up believing he had won the match. The ref awarded the pin to Sigmon however, ruling in effect that Fountain had pinned himself. The result was a 22-13 B.U. lead.
Junior Jose Leon (Santa Ana, CA) got the Terriers off to a good start, scoring a technical fall over Justin Friend at 125 pounds. After Springfield went up, 13-10, Emond pinned Matt Sambullo in 4:38 at 165 pounds to put B.U. back on top, 16-13.
The Terriers would win the next four matches, including Abri, who pinned Cori Burd in only 1:26 at 197 pounds.
The Terriers will next face Seton Hall on Saturday, January 20 at 5 p.m. at Case Gym.
