Wrestling Terriers Fall to 17th-Ranked Hofstra, 31-12

BOSTON - The Boston University wrestling team was defeated by Hofstra University, 31-12, at Case Gymnasium on Thursday, Dec. 12. The Pride entered the match ranked first in the Colonial Athletic Association and 17th in the country.
In the first match of the evening, Hofstra's Chris Skretowicz defeated B. U.'s Chad Grant (Edin Rapids, MI), 9-1, at 184-pounds to give the Pride an early 4-0 lead. The Terriers' Courtney Howard (Sitka, AK) then dropped a close match to Dan Garay, 2-1, to give Hofstra a 7-0 advantage.
Hofstra (1-1, 1-0 CAA) forfeited the 125-pound weight class and B. U. forfeited the 133-pound weight class to bring the score to 13-6. Freshmen Justin Blumenthal (Madison, WI), wrestling at 141, then lost a hard-fought match to Matt Homenick, 5-3, in overtime. Hofstra extended its lead when Jon Masa upended senior Jason Holder (Salem, NH), 11-3, at 149 pounds.
Sophomore Rayes Gonzales (Las Vegas, NV) got the Terriers back on track when he pinned Mike Patrovich to cut the Pride lead to 20-12. Hofstra's Noel Thompson, ranked fourth in the country at 165, extended the visitors' lead by slipping past junior Leighton Brady (Tulsa, OK), 3-1, in overtime.
Junior Ben Schilens (Westlake, OH) was defeated by Ralph Everett in the 174-pound weight class and Senior Ed Strauss (Easton, PA) dropped a 3-1 decision to Brad Christie to close out the scoring.
The Terriers (2-1, 1-1 CAA) will continue the dual match portion of their schedule when they welcome conference foe Wagner University to "The Roof" on January 10th. The first match is scheduled for 7 p.m.
