Terrier Wrestlers Compete In Wilkes Open, Midland Championship

BOSTON - Five Boston University wrestlers participated in the Wilkes Open and Midland Championship on Dec. 28-29. Senior Jason Holder (Salem, N. H.), and sophomores Rayes Gonzales (Las Vegas, Nev.) and Warren Haines (Alexandria, Va.) competed in the Wilkes Open in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., while senior Jose Leon (Santa Ana, Calif.) and junior Leighton Brady (Tulsa, Okla.) traveled to Evanston, Ill. to take part in the Midlands.
Holder, wrestling at 149, won a 2-1 decision over Penn State's Matt Storniolo in the consolation final, finishing third. Gonzales lost his consolation final, 18-4, to Lehigh's Ted Dufresne. He finished fourth. Haines did not record a win, finishing 0-2.
At the Midlands Championship, Leon, wrestling unattached, posted a 5-2 record and finished seventh. He fell into the consolation bracket after a 3-0 loss to No. 4 Chris Rodriguez of the University of North Carolina. He fought his way back into contention with four straight wins, but was pinned 2:56 into his rematch with Rodriguez. Leon went on to defeated Cal-Bakersfield's Efren Ceballos in the seventh-place match.
Brady, wrestling at 165, wrapped up his weekend at the Midlands with a 2-2 record. He posted victories over Iowa's Blake Henderson (8-5) and Northern Illinois' George Kirgan (7-4). His two defeats were to ranked wrestlers. He fell to No. 4 Johnny Clark of Ohio State in a close match, 3-2. He finished the tournament with another 3-2 loss, this time to No. 5 Noel Thompson of Hofstra.
The Terriers (2-1, 1-1 CAA) next wrestle against conference opponent Wagner at Case Gym on Friday, Jan. 10. The dual match begins at 7 p.m.
