Terrier Wrestlers Finish Third at CAA Championship

Harrisonburg, VA- The Boston University wrestling team placed third this weekend (March 8-9) at the Colonial Athletic Association Championship in Harrisonburg, VA. The Terriers finished with 64.5 points, behind first-place Hofstra (111 points) and second-place Drexel (88.5 points). Individually for B.U., Ali Abri took first-place at the 184-pound weight class while Jose Leon was the runner-up at 125, Jason Holder finished third at 149.
Abri, the top-seeded wrestler at 184, pinned PJ Richard of Wagner at 2:26 of their quarterfinal match and upended Dave Colabella of James Madison, 9-5, in the semifinals. In the finals, Abri squared off with Pat Miller of Drexel who came into the match with an overall record of 18-7 on the year. In a hard-fought match, Abri defeated Miller, 15-10, to win the weight class.
Leon recorded a major decision over Todd Schroeder of James Madison, 17-6, and pinned Rob Rebmann of Drexel, before losing to the top seed Tom Noto of Hofstra, 3-1, in the finals of the 125-pound weight class to finish second.
Senior Jason Holder took third-place at the 149-pound weight class and was named a wildcard alternate for a berth in the NCAA Tournament. Holder pinned Mike Payack of BC in the first-round and followed up with a 5-1 decision over Matt Kennett of Drexel in the quarterfinals. Holder was defeated in the semifinals, but rebounded by taking the consolation semifinal over Mike Wrinkle of Campell. In the consolation finals, Holder defeated Kennett for the second time in the tournament, this time slipping by, 6-5, in double overtime.
As a team the Terriers finished the season 11-4 overall and 5-2 in the CAA. The 11 wins are the most by a B.U. wrestling squad since the 1993-94 season in which it went 12-1.
