Wrestling Terriers Defeat Sacred Heart, 21-18

BOSTON - The Boston University wrestling team improved to 4-1, 3-1 in the Colonial Athletic Association, with a 21-18 conference victory over Sacred Heart on Saturday, Jan. 11 at Case Gym. Sacred Heart fell to 1-2, 0-2 in the CAA.
Terrier senior co-captain Jason Holder (Salem, N. H.) opened the dual with a 5-2 decision over Sacred Heart's Mark Laramee at 149. The Pioneers' Robert Belville tied the score at 3-3 with a 3-1, overtime, decision over B. U.'s Rayes Gonzales at 157.
Junior Leighton Brady's (Tulsa, Okla.) 9-4 decision over SHU's Ronald Wright at 165 allowed the Terriers to regain the lead at 6-3. At 174, Sacred Heart's Wayne Oakley pinned junior Ben Schilens (Westlake, Ohio) with 14 seconds left in regulation to give the Pioneers their first lead at 9-6.
Senior Ed Strauss (Easton, Pa.) returned the favor at 184 with a pin of Derek Venne at 4:53. Senior Chad Grant (Edin Rapids, Mich.) took on Anthony Reynolds, ranked sixth in the nation at 197, and suffered a 7-3 loss.
At heavyweight, sophomore Courtney Howard (Sitka, Alaska) won a tight, 3-1, decision over John Miller in overtime, which pushed B. U.'s advantage to 15-12. Freshman Michael Galorenzo (Oradell, N. J.) gave the Terriers a nine-point advantage with a pin, at 2:08, of Philip Kalil at 125.
Freshman Greg Politi (East Hanover, N. J.), in the first conference match of his career, dropped a 5-1 decision to defending CAA champion Jason Cucolo at 133.
The Pioneers trailed, 21-15, heading into the final match at 141. Freshman Jason Blumenthal (Madison, Wisc.) dropped a 6-4, overtime, decision to Michael Messina, but earned the Terriers a hard-fought 21-18 win.
